So
you'd like to do your own updates...
Making
your own updates/changes to your website is an excellent way
to keep content current, keep the website exciting, and save
money on updates! Realize that there is a slight learning
curve to it, but I am providing very detailed instructions
to make the process as painless as possible.
Back
up your data. This is easy. Right-click on the folder containing
your website on your computer, and hit 'copy'. Then, 'paste'
it somewhere else. Webpage files are just like Word documents
- if you mess something up, you can paste the old version
you saved and everything will be back to the way it was when
you started.
Prepare
your desktop. You will have two folders open. On the left,
the copy of the website that is local (on your desktop). When
we launch your site live to the world and you 'take ownership',
I send you a zip file containing the entire website and all
files we used. On the right, you will have a "live ftp
folder" open. Depending on your ISP, this folder will
be opened using a name and password. Anything you drag into
this folder, from your left-side local folder, will go onto
the live site, where the world can see it.
The
process is simple. You make all the changes on the files (webpages)
in the left, local folder. You save, close, then double click
to view them to see if it looks good. Once it does, you drag
this newly updated file (usually a little 'Blue E' html file)
into the live folder, where it overwrites the live version.
Once you have done it a few times, you'll see that websites
can be updated in just a few minutes, and you'll really start
to enjoy the ability to see your changes go live instantly.
I
will walk you through the process - whether it be on the telephone
or instand message or email - the first time you do it, if
you need it. Please don't let the process intimidate you.
I have elderly clients with zer computer experience who update
their webpages a few days a week by just slowly following
the steps.
And,
if you find you just don't have the time, or would rather
not have the worry of maintaining your website, I do offer
that service as well. Cost is $10 per update, or $150 for
a yearlong update package. Both ways work!
As
always, Email Me for
more information or if you have any questions!
